In Davis in the 1950s, an undergraduate student named John Finley Scott created what he called the “Woodsie,” which was one of the earliest efforts toward the bikes that would become mountain bikes.
Pictured here is a Scott bike, the Woodsie from 1953 that author Frank Berto identifies as a progenitor of modern mountain bikes. Berto references this actual bike and notes that the bike was stolen but never recovered. The recent discovery of this photograph helps to document an important—and very early—starting point for mountain bikes.
