Safety Bicycle Era

Waltham Orient

Tandem bicycles were very popular in the late Nineteenth Century. Often used for courting, tandems designed for a man and woman usually had the lady’s position in front. However, the gentleman could still control the bicycle because a common feature was to link the front and rear handlebars to allow steering from the rear position. Note the anatomical saddle in front.
