Safety Bicycle Era

Cleveland Lady’s Safety Bicycle ~ 1893

The Lozier Manufacturing Co. was a prominent producer of sewing machines and bicycles beginning in the early 1880s in Plattsburgh, New York. Henry Lozier, an Ohio native, dubbed his line of bikes “Clevelands” and they were of very high quality. Note the lacing through the chainguard and fenders that protected the rider’s skirts from getting caught in the spokes and drive train. Like many early bicycle manufacturers, the company transitioned to building automobiles, and the luxurious Loziers were for a time the most expensive cars produced in the United States.
