The velocipede was the natural next step up from the draisine. Attaching cranks and pedals to the front wheel allowed the rider to become truly self-propelled. This model was fitted with a rudimentary brake activated by twisting the handlebar which, through a chain linkage, pressed a “spoon brake” against the rear wheel. Most velocipedes were heavy, being sturdily constructed from wood and iron. The bell was installed to alert equestrians and prevent "spooking" horses.
